Rasheed Wallace has agreed to sign with the Celtics on a 2 year contract reportedly worth the full mid-level exemption of roughly $5.8 million. Celtics stars Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce joined coach Doc Rivers, owner Wyc Grousbeck and general manager Danny Ainge during a three hour meeting in Detroit on Thursday and they must’ve said something Wallace liked. Wallace’s agent, Bill Strickland was in the process of scheduling meetings with other interested teams when Rasheed decided to take the Celtics up on their offer without even listening to what the other teams could offer. A close relationship with Celtics forward Kevin Garnett is likely a factor in his decision.
The Celtics can only offer him a bench role, however, Wallace believes it is his best chance for another championship – and he might be right. The Celtics are loaded with veterans such as Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen and Paul Pierce and rising star Rajon Rondo along with bruising center Kendrick Perkins. If the Celtics had had more depth at the center position, they may have made a go at a championship this past season. Wallace helps them in this area going into next year. Wallace can play the low post and can shoot from just about anywhere on the floor.
Playing off the bench is a different game and it remains to be seen whether or not Wallace can adjust to the change of pace. But many believe that the Celtics just cemented themselves as the team to beat in the Eastern Conference. They definitely cemented themselves as the team most likely to lead the league in technical fouls.
