How to Lose Weight on the Rice Diet

Losing weight on the Rice Diet does not mean that you have to eat rice all day, every day.  The overall decrease in salt from the Rice Diet makes you feel less bloated and more energetic. Your body only needs 500 mgs per day of salt, but most of us eat 5 times that number. Not only will you feel healthier once you are eating less salt, since you are allowed to eat starches, you may not get as hungry as you would on other diets.

The Rice Diet consists of three basic phases:

The Detox Phase : This phase lasts for the first week that you are on the diet. For day one, you should eat a total of six starches and six fruits. The other six days of the week, you should eat 7 starches, 6 vegetables, 3 fruits and 1 non-fat dairy per day.

The Lasting Weight Loss Phase : This phase lasts for as long as you want to actively try to lose weight. One day per week, you should eat 6 starches and 6 fruits. Another day of the week, you should eat 8 starches, 6 vegetables, 3 fruits and 3 proteins or 2 dairy. For the remaining five days of the week, you should eat 7 starches, 6 vegetables, 3 fruits and 1 non-fat dairy per day.

The Maintenance Phase : One day a week, you should eat 6 starches and 6 fruits. Two days a week, you should eat 7 starches, 6 vegetables, 3 fruits and 3 proteins or 2 dairy per day. The other four days of the week, you should eat 7 starches, 6 vegetables, 3 fruits and 1 non-fat dairy per day.

Examples of Starches:

-1/2 bagel
-1/2 cup grits
-1/3 cup rice
-3 cups popcorn
-2 rice cakes
-1 small baked potato
-1 ear corn on the cob
-1 corn tortilla
-1 slice bread

Examples of Vegetables: (1/2 cup of any of the following)

-green beans
-carrots
-okra
-spinach
-tomato
-greens
-cabbage

Examples of Fruits:

-1 apple
-1/2 banana
-3/4 cup blueberries
-15 grapes
-3/4 cup mandarin oranges
-1 peach
-1 pear
-1 and 1/2 cup strawberries

Examples of Protein:

-1 oz. beef
-1 egg
-1 oz. fish
-1 oz. pork

Examples of Dairy:

-1 cup nonfat soymilk
-1 cup skim milk
-1 cup plain yogurt
-1/2 cup ricotta cheese

When if comes to choosing what to drink with this diet, you should stick to water, herbal teas, non-sweetened fruit juices, crystal light and zero or no calorie colas.
