Swine flu is a latest virus causing illness in people. It was detected in United States in April, 2009, following Mexico, Canada. This virus spreads from person to person, and is very similar to the virus that generally occurs in pigs in N-America. The outbreak of this virus was so rapid that there has been reporting cases of illness from all over the world from more than 70 countries.

World Health Organization has alerted worldwide about the global spread of influenza. It is contagious and spreads from human to human, through coughing or sneezing, some people gets infected just by touching someone who has flu viruses and then touching their mouth or nose. It is much similar to the symptoms of flu and includes fever, cough, sore throat, runny nose, headache, vomiting, diarrhoea, body aches. This virus is not spread by food, so you will not get infected by eating pork or pork products, if they are cooked properly. There have been many cases of death as a result of this illness. People who are 65 years old, children under 5 years, pregnant women, and people who suffer chronic medical condition like diabetes and asthma are more prone to such infection.

Follow these steps to protect your health –

Always cover your nose and mouth with a tissue, when you cough or sneeze, and throw the tissue in the trash after using it.

Wash your hands with soap and water, after you cough or sneeze. Its better to use alcohol based hand cleaner; you can even use alcohol based disposable hand wipes available in drug stores.

If you are sick, stay at home, and avoid contacting persons to keep them away from infection.

Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.

Stay away from crowded areas and other social places.

Avoid contact with sick people.

If you are sick, keep away from  people and stay at home for at least a week, cover your mouth and nose while coughing and sneezing and clean your hands, every time you cough or sneeze.
