Six Tips to Become an Early Riser

For some people, waking up early is a real problem because they have trouble sleeping at night. If you have the problem, don’t jump to the conclusion that you have insomnia. The cure for it might be as simple as changing your mattress or rearranging the bedroom furniture. There are others who suffer from genuine sleeping disorders and need to be treated medically. For most people though, the inability to wake up early can be attributed to laziness and a lack of self-discipline. In that case, rearranging the furniture would be an exercise in futility and changing your mattress would just be a needless expense. Read on for a few tips that will make it easier for you start your day bright and early.

Don’t try to force things. Start out by waking up 15-30 minutes earlier than your usual time. Once you are used to it, progress to next level. Your transformation into an early riser will be much more comfortable if it is gradual.

Its easy to see that if you want to wake up early, you have to go to bed early. If you try to cut back on the hours of sleep, you might end up walking around like a zombie all day. If you are used to watching television or surfing the net during the night, you will have to sacrifice some of that time to getting a good night’s sleep.

At first, you might find it difficult to fall asleep when you go to bed earlier than usual. You can try reading a book to help you fall asleep, but make sure that it is the most boring book you can find. Deeply philosophical works have been known to be particularly effective in putting people to sleep. I recommend Spinoza.

Keep your alarm clock some distance away from your bed. Not too far though, as you might not hear it when it rings. If possible, use a clock without a snooze button (if such things exist). In extreme cases and as a last resort, try to find an alarm clock thats gives you a mild electric shock when you touch the snooze button.

While lying in bed, you will find yourself coming up with excellent arguments on why you should sleep for five more minutes. The entire fate of the universe might seem to depend on it. But Don’t fall into the rationalization trap. Keep an immediate and compelling reason to wake up in the morning. In my case it is the urge to pee. It could be different for you.

Waking up early gives you a number of advantages, such as being able to watch the sunrise and experience the fresh, crisp early morning air. If that is not exactly your thing, think of something that gives you great pleasure (other than going back to bed) and make it a part of your morning routine. Deny yourself the pleasure if you oversleep.
