On last night’s episode of Jon and Kate Plus 8, the couple announced that they would be separating. They both stated that the show would be continuing. The kids would remain in the house and the parents would stay there based on a schedule that had yet to be determined. They would film things separately, interviews, activities, etc. TLC announced in a statement today that the show will be going on hiatus until August while they determine “the best way to continue to tell their story as they navigate through this difficult time”. The next new episode will air Aug. 3.
Neither Jon or Kate ever specifically used the word “divorce” during the episode, they referred to their status as separation and they both said they were uncertain what would happen which certainly could lead one to think that a reconciliation between the two was at least a possibility. But hours before the episode aired, Kate Gosselin filed for divorce. She released the following statement:
“Over the course of this weekend, Jon’s activities have left me no choice but to file legal procedures in order to protect myself and our children,” Kate said in a statement. “While there are reasons why it was appropriate and necessary for me to initiate this proceeding, I do not wish to discuss those reasons at this time, in the hope that all issues will be resolved amicably between Jon and myself. As always, my first priority remains our children.”
Jon’s statement is as follows:
“This afternoon, Kate filed for divorce. Our kids are still my number one priority. I love them and want to make sure they stay happy, healthy and safe. My job is being the best, most supportive and loving father that I can be to my kids, and not being married to Kate doesn’t change that…This will be a difficult transition for all of us, but Kate and I will work out a schedule that enables our kids to have plenty of quality time with both of us at home in Pennsylvania. In terms of my marriage, it’s no secret that the past six months or so have been very difficult for Kate and me. We are no different than other couples and parents who are facing a crossroads in their marriage. I am of course deeply saddened that we are divorcing.”
Whatever your feelings are about the Gosselins, whether you hate them or loved watching them, you can’t help but feel saddened by the current turn of events. If only for those kids’ sake. They didn’t ask for any of this. They didn’t ask for every moment of their lives to be documented and put on display. Even if TLC does not film through this adjustment period, those rules will surely not apply to the ever present papparazzi. For anyone who has ever experienced divorce, imagine going through that with a camera stuck in your face the whole time.
While the news came to no surprise to anyone who’s followed the show, many have expressed outrage at the fact that the announcement was televised. An announcement that will undoubtedly be shattering to those kids seems to have been used as a tool to gain ratings. There is such a thing as too much reality.
