While driving I was flipping radio channels. I stopped briefly on a Christian radio station and heard the speaker talking about the phrase twinkling of an eye and was intrigued. The definition is simple ‘a moment in time’. However there is no definition about how long that moment is. This information made me stop and consider what I was hearing.
We know what the speed of light is. We know what time of day it is. We know how quickly our eyelids blink. We know how many items can be manufactured in any given specification. We know a lot about time. So what is a twinkling of an eye in time? One mathematician has calculated an estimated guess at 1 trillionth of a second. That is so quick we cannot even comprehend it!
Why is this so important? To put it simply, it is the time it takes to travel from the point we are here on the earth alive to the point we are with God in heaven. It is in that moment that we be raised, given a new holy body that is imperishable and put on immortality. That is a lot of things happening in the twinkling of an eye.
As I thought about this simple phrase I began to see God as the everlasting God. He has no beginning, no end. He is not constrained with time as we know it. He sees times beginning, times end, times moments and eternity all at the same time. Time was a created concept for this world. It was created when the sun and moon was created. It was set as day and night. But God was before time began as we know it. Do leave this so quickly. Stop and just meditate on what I am saying. Do not try to understand. It is beyond our human understanding, but God has placed His Spirit in each believer and His Spirit does understand it! Seek God and He will meet you.
What an amazing glimpse into God who desires to know us personally! His everlasting attribute is beyond my full comprehension but in His love He revealed this glimpse Himself to me. When I see how big my God is I can bow humbly and rest in His care.
We all need to hear this message. When the world crashes around with no answers in sight, knowing that God is beyond our comprehension should give us peace. We can face tomorrow because we know who lives! We can rest in our Father’s protective strong arms, letting Him defend me in front of enemies.
So many times we are struggling for answers that we miss getting to know God. Stop today and seek God. Ask Him to reveal some attribute of Himself he wants to reveal a small glimpse of. He desires to develop a relationship with you that goes both ways. Rest in Him today. Let Him bring you His peace and assurance that He has conquered death and sin.
‘Behold, I tell you a mystery; we will not all sleep, but we will all be changed,
in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet; for the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we will be changed. For this perishable must put on the imperishable, and this mortal must put on immortality. But when this perishable will have put on the imperishable, and this mortal will have put on immortality, then will come about the saying that is written, “DEATH IS SWALLOWED UP in victory. “O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR VICTORY? O DEATH, WHERE IS YOUR STING?” The sting of death is sin, and the power of sin is the law; but thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.’
I Corinthians 15:51-57
