Noted Environmentalist Seeks Philippine Presidency

A noted Filipino environmentalist is running for president of the Philippines in the 2010 national elections.

Jesus Nicanor ‘Nick’Perlas lll said he will seek the presidency as an alternative choice for the people who want change in governance.

Inquirer.net reports:

>“There are many Filipinos who have grown tired of elections where there are no real choices. We are tired of always having to choose the lesser evil. This is why I am announcing my intention to run in the 2010 elections,” Perlas told some 50 friends and supporters at the Bantayog ng mga Bayani park in Quezon City. >

If elected, Perlas said he would ensure a “tight case” against President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. She has damaged this country so much, and I want justice. Also if he is elected, he will focus on poverty reduction by stamping out corruption to be able to draw local and foreign investments, he added.

Perlas is married to Kathryn Carpenter and has a son named Christopher Michael. Perlas holds a bachelor’s degree in agriculture fro the Xavier University and a master’s degree in environmental science from the University of the Philippines in Los Banos.

Perlas served as consultant of the Presidential Committee on the Philippine Nuclear Power Plant and the Philippine Council for sustainable development during the Ramos and Aquino administration.

Perlas received several awards for his environmental advocacy including the Global 500 award from the United Nations environmental program and Outstanding Filipino Award from the Philippine Jaycess.
