Mikey Arroyo, the congressman son of the president of the Philippines today expressed his desire to run for governor of Pampanga, Philippines. The young Arroyo is on his second term as congressman of his district. By law he is allowed to run for one last term for the same position.
Earlier, his mother, Philippine president Glora Macapagal Arroyo expressed her desire to seek a congressional seat in her home province in Pampanga.
Congressman Arroyo said that he will seek the governorship of Pampanga by challenging the incumbent former catholic priest turned politician, Governor Ed Panlilio. This scenario will effectively hand over his current post to his mother if she finally decides to run for a congressional seat. The president is expected to win handily in his son’s congressional district mainly because of her and his son’s influence and popularity in the area.
>“If I follow my heart, I want a third term. But of course I won’t deny the fact that many of the political leaders there, even the clergy and those supporting, who support Governor Panlilio, are egging me on to run because he’s a nonperforming asset,” Arroyo said in an interview yesterday, a day after his arrival from a US visit. >
Political supporters of the Philippine president have been urging her to run for an elective post after her term expires next year. Her political opponents believe that the president wants her immunity from suit preserved even after she steps down from the presidency.
Under the law, elective officials enjoy certain immunities from suits while holding on to their elective positions in government. Politicians in the opposition along with some cause –oriented groups have warned the president that she will face court suits involving various anomalies in government during her incumbency.
