You don’t have to do this alone. Get in touch with some of your neighbors and ask them over for some coffee, donuts and orange juice. Then ask them if they are interested in helping with the planning.
If this is the first block party you and your neighbors have ever planned, then you should have a list of things to discuss….food, music, games, etc.
Make sure one person doesn’t do it all. Some people would love to help, but they are very shy so they don’t speak up. A good solution to this would be to put some ‘jobs’ down on paper and drop them in a hat. Pass the hat around and let everyone pull out a piece of paper and that is what they are in charge of. Make sure to let them know that if anyone needs help you are all there to help each other because you want the block party to me a success.
Another big aspect of your block party is the food. Make this simple by having a potluck. Just make sure you have a list so that you don’t end up with 50 macaroni salads.
Don’t forget about the clean-up. After all the fun is done, you need to make sure the fun isn’t all over the place. Have your neighbors bring their trash cans so that you can place them around the area of your block party for people to use throughout the evening…
Some other things to remember:
- Working together with your neighbors can be very rewarding and a lot of fun…try it, you might just find you like it.
- Start small with your first party, you can always add to it the next year.
- Don’t let your block party get out of hand and become more of a burden then fun
