What should the U.S. do about the pirates, if anything?
Sounds so 19th century. And yes, a bit scary. We’ve all seen at least one pirate movie haven’t we? But it seems that modern piracy has been a pretty easy and lucrative business. Until recently that is. When I first posted this question, I took it for granted that we, the U.S., should do something about U.S. ships and U.S. citizens being attacked, but now I’m not so sure that shipping companies shouldn’t be the ones footing the bill protecting their own assets. And no, I’m sorry, I don’t give a crap how other countries deal with the problem( ransom insurance?! Are you serious?!).
Some questions though; Where does all this money go? Terrorism? Easy Living for the leaders? In my mind the answer to these questions should determine our response, it’s the difference between criminals and terrorists. If they are criminals, let the shipping companies hire some well-trained security guards. If they are funding terrorists, TAKE THEM OUT! NOW! And we should not care what the rest of the world says or thinks. ARJAY 4/17/09
Will the Obama administration end the Cuban Embargo? Should it?
The U.S. trades with China. The U.S. trades with Vietnam. The U.S. gets oil from Venezuela. If Iran and North Korea weren’t led by a couple of nuke-happy nut jobs, the U.S. would be trading with them. But for nearly 50 years now we’ve refused to trade with Cuba. Because? I know, it’s complicated. The Cuban missile crisis; the Bay of Pigs;the political clout of those who escaped Fidel Castros’ clutches; Cuba being ninety miles off our shores; and the way I see it, the two most obvious reasons; Castros’ unabashed, spit in the eye arrogance toward the U.S., and the political fear of U.S. politicians.
If the supposed reason to engage in an embargo is to encourage the masses to revolt against its’ oppressor, it hasn’t worked with Cuba and if the given reason we supposedly trade with other murderous regimes is to export freedom and democratic ideals(I’m sure cheap labor has nothing to do with it!?), then why wouldn’t we want to export those principles to Cuba? If Obama does lift the embargo, I will give him credit, but I don’t think it’s going to happen. It’s not going to happen because CASTRO DOES NOT WANT THE EMBARGO LIFTED! He wants to continue to be able to scapegoat the U.S. for his destroying of his nation, it would be a threat to him and his brothers’ stranglehold of power. But we’ll see. arjay 04/26/09
Is it a possibility that this outbreak is a terrorist attack? Just asking.
Is this the “Big One”? The deadly traveling flu that would do in millions of people like in 1918. It’s “guess-timated” that between 20 – 100 million people died from an influenza outbreak that year. Let’s pray that this won’t be nowhere near the case this time. One has to wonder though; who, what, where, when, how and why? The media and the conspiracy theorists are having a field day, which is no surprise, but what I really, really don’t want to see are politicians using this crisis to further their agendas. But it is already happening, ya’ know they “can’t ever let a crisis go to waste, when you can do things that you would never be able to do normally”.
Supposedly, the government has checked out and dismissed the terrorist attack angle, but would they tell us if it is an attack, considering they didn’t stop it? Just thinking out loud. Will the Mexico to U.S. flights be halted and borders be sealed? Don’t hold your breathe. Never mind the health risks, doing those precautions just isn’t politicall correct!
Back in 1918 the flu infections started slowly early in the year, but “kicked in” in the fall. So we have lots of questions, but only time may provide the answers. arjay 04/28/09
