Finding ways to stop snoring is actually easier than you might think. Did you know that snoring is affects around four out of ten men and up to three out of ten women! Not to mention, of course, the millions of partners and neighbors experiencing nights disturbed by the noise of snoring.
Snoring is caused by parts of the nose and throat vibrating when you are asleep with breathing, particularly the soft palate. This happens as a result of the muscles that usually keep the airways open relaxing during sleeping. Therefore, the airways narrow and vibrate causing snoring.
Snoring can be exacerbated as a result of several factors:
– Alcohol or sleeping tablets – these relax the muscles even further
– Being overweight – puts pressure on the airways
– Colds, allergies, nasal polyps, a damaged or crooked nose – can block the nose, causing you to breathe through your mouth
– Smoking – smokers airways get inflamed and blocked
– Sleeping on your back
Another possibility is that you could be suffering with obstructive sleep apnoea. This means that the relaxed throat muscles briefly block the airway hundreds of times each night stopping breathing and causing lack of oxygen to the body. This leads to tiredness, restlessness and irritability. In the longer-term it may lead high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes.
There are several treatments available for snoring, most of which are physical devices for encouraging people to breathe through their nose rather than through the mouth.
An alternative approach is hypnotherapy, which essentially re-trains people to breathe differently at night and therefore cure snoring. Hypnotherapy can also assist the non-snoring partner in training them to ignore the snoring of their spouse and therefore achieve a good night’s sleep.
