A study was released in the United Kingdom back in 2002 based on interviews with 350 respondents who claimed to have had a variety of experiences with angels. Their experiences ranged from visions, to messages, to a sense of touch. The meanings of such experiences seemed to range from a sign or warning of a potentially dangerous situation, to making their presence felt, to a score of others.

At least 55 percent of them believed that they are being protected by a guardian angel, including those who claimed to not be practicing any form of formal religion.

Another study also indicated that 68 percent of the American public believes that demons and angels are active in the world.

Jewish and Christian traditions both carry the popular belief of the existence of angels in theology and in folklore.

The concept of angels has been in the minds of man for around 4000 years, or even longer. Many believe that angels are sent by God as messengers to bring messages of truth during critical situations.

Angels, according to Christian beliefs, provide proof that God is always watching out for His people; angels can be a kind of spiritual envoy, carrying God’s message to His people.

Many believe that angels play a large part in the lives of Christians. However, they are not supposed meddle in human affairs or fix problems. Rather, they are to be helpers in are ability to respond and adhere to the truth. These angels guide people in the way God wants His people to go in specific situations or circumstances.

The belief in angels is evidenced with hundreds of references to spiritual beings, also categorically identified as angels in the Bible, which lends credence to their existence in the spiritual realm.

There are specific Biblical references to beings known as ‘angels of the Lord’ who sometimes have been considered as God, Himself. However, is actually an archangel which is sent by God.

However, angels must never be mistaken for spirit guides, since the presence of angels is not designed to run people’s lives. They are only sent to do observe and guide in the background. This supports the belief that man is created with free will and that interference with it should only be limited to guidance and protection.

People do not go looking for angels the way that people usually do with spirit guides. Angels usually come in God’s timing .

Many traditions also believe that one of the primary functions of angels is that of serving as guardians for specific people and  that they are assigned protective roles in the lives of people.

Among the many stories that mention angels in the Bible are the dramatic escape of the Apostle Peter from jail, the life-changing manifestion of an angel who showed himself to the Apostle Paul on the way to Damascus, and the angel who wrestled with Jacob.

The best answer to why and what is an angel is that God intends them to carry out special tasks of guidance and protection and to bring messages for the good of mankind.
