Lifestyle Changes to Lose Weight

Diets are great for losing some pounds quickly, but to keep the weight off you are going to need to do more than just go on a diet.  Your diet has to end sometime, unless you want to be on a diet your whole life, and when it does the weight is going to come back. Don’t go on a diet.  Instead, change a few habits and make a few new ones. Even something that seems unimportant could make a big difference over time.

Something very important to avoid is starving yourself to try to drop a few pounds. If you don’t eat enough during the day, your body tells itself to save the calories that you have ingested. It slows your metabolism down and overall gives you the opposite effect of what you want. Overeating doesn’t help you either. You have to find the right balance for you. Eat when you are hungry, don’t eat when you are not.  A good way to fight a craving is by waiting ten minutes when you want something. Usually after that time you don’t want what you are craving as much and hopefully will be able to say no to eating it if you are not really hungry. To make this easier, drink a glass or bottle of water during this ten minutes.

Something small that is helpful is simply slowing down when you eat.  Allow yourself to chew your food thoroughly and take your time.  This will make it easier for you to digest and will give your stomach time to get full.  This is very effective in preventing you from overeating. Drinking more water is also necessary, not only for losing weight but for your overall health. It flushes toxins from your body and it also can help you feel full without filling your body full of calories.

Sleep is vital to you if you are trying to maintain a healthy weight. Studies have shown that sleep deprivation can lead to an increase in appetite and that people who get less than 7 hours of sleep each night are more likely to be obese.

Avoid eating processed and fried foods. Try to eat more fruits and vegetables, as these are naturally good for you and do not contain harmful ingredients, but not fruits or veggies that have added sugar. Also, soups are good to eat. They are filling and often low in calories.

One final thing to change is exercise.  Even if it is nothing major, just get up and out more often.  Anything that gets your heart pumping is a good exercise.  Cardio is extremely important to burn calories.
