Edward was born as Edward Anthoney Masen as a human on June 20, 1901. In 1918, the Spanish influenza epidemic hit where he lived in Chicago, Illinois. His parents were Edward Masen Sr. and Elizabeth Masen. He and his parents became ill, and stayed in a hospital uner the care of Dr. Cralisle Cullen. Dr. Cullen,as any Twilight reader knows, is a vampire and was living as a human secretly, but peacefully amoung other humans. Edward’s father died, and so did his mother. She begged a last request to Dr. Cullen to save her son. Carlisle was had no vampire companions, and was torn about how to save Edward. He would most likely die if left human, so Carlisle transformed him into a vampire, freezing him forever seventeen.
In the years following Edward’s rebirth as a vampire, he left Carlisle and lived recklessly succumbing to his thirst. But he later returned to Carlisle, and found he had a lover. Carlisle had saved a barely living Esme after she jumped off a cliff and turned her into a vampire. Carlisle eventually taught Edward a way to live peacefully amoung humans by drinking animal blood, instead of human. In the following years and decades, a few more people were saved from a looming death by Carlisle’s trasformations. Carlisle and Esme Cullen became parent figures to Edward Cullen, Alice Cullen, Emmett Cullen, Japser Hale and Rosalie Hale.
The Cullen “family” took a permanent resedence in Forks, Washington and the adopted children all enrolled in the local high school. Then Bella Swan moves to Forks, and Edward’s life is changed forever.
Edward is described in the series as charming, polite, determined, and very stubborn. He is very protective over Bella and puts her safety, humanity and welfare before anything else. He tends to over-analyze and overreact, especially in situations where Bella’s in any risk. He retains some outdated speech from his human life in the early 20th century. Edward sees himself as a monster, and after falling in love with Bella, he desperately wishes that he were human instead of a vampire.
